Anti-TBR Tag: Books I Don’t Plan to Read

Posted November 20, 2020 by Kate

hello, loves!

I found the Anti-TBR Book Tag on Nicole & Her Book’s channel last week, and had so much fun looking at everyone’s answers! I had to do it myself, of course!! ???  Nicole makes an excellent point – this shouldn’t be a controversial topic! People have different tastes. You like your hair long and I like mine short. Doesn’t mean either is wrong! You love Cardaan and I couldn’t care less about his tail! Please let’s still be friends ?

A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading?

I love Holly Black’s writing and have thoroughly enjoyed her other books, but Queen of Nothing by Holly Black just holds no appeal to me. I didn’t really love Cruel Prince (it was okay, but didn’t really enjoy any of the characters) or Wicked King, so I have no plans to buy or read Queen of Nothing. Maybe I’ll read a spoilery review and satisfy my passing interest in how it turns out.

I haven’t read a Taylor Jenkins Reid book, and while both Daisey Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo are on my TBR and do sound vaguely interesting, my library loan has come in on both of these books multiple times and I’ve let it lapse each go-round. I’m never in the mood.

Someday I may pick these up, and I might even really enjoy them. But for now, I don’t have too much of an interest in starting them.

A classic book you don’t have an interest in reading?

I wish I never read A Catcher in the Rye, but thanks to junior-year English class, that ship has majorly sailed. But in truth, my answer to this question would be  all of them, except Pride and Prejudice. If I had to pick one, however, my answer would be Moby Dick by Herman Melville. For the longest time in my childhood, I thought this followed a story of a duck. Maybe because it rhymed with “Dick”? Can’t say for sure. I know if featured water, and in reading the synopsis just now, I’m even less inclined to read this. I already read a book about a man sailing by Ernest Hemmingway, and that was enough of the classics for me, thank you.

An author whose books you have no interest in reading?

I own this first book, but I honestly have no interest in ever reading it. Her newer release The Midnight Lie is a tempting read, but I honestly don’t think it will ever happen ? I just don’t picture myself buying it.

I’m rarely in the mood for YA fantasy, and I read some pretty negative and convincing reads early on for The Winners Curse by Marie Rutkoski. This book is on my mental block list.

An author whose books you’ve read & have ultimately decided their books are not for you?

I have to admit, Nicole, the original creator of this tag, is the one that inspired me with this answer. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman is a very popular book that people are absolutely infatuated with. But her books just really stress me out! They are so simple, but they make me feel old, out of touch, and behind.

People really find themselves in Alice’s books and I’m so happy for them that Alice’s books do that for them! But unfortunately, I just haven’t had the same experience.

This book was gifted to me several years back, maybe in middle school? I have to say, I really enjoyed Fangirl, enjoyed Carry On, and oddly enjoyed Attachments, but Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell just sounds so straight-up dull. Anytime I read the synopsis, I’m tempted to un-haul it. And I’ve even started it half a dozen times over the years, but am bored to tears within the first three pages. I just can’t with this book. So even though I’ve vaguely enjoyed most of her books (3-3.5 stars across the board, really), she’ll never write another Fangirl and I’m just not really interested in another of her books.

A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into & couldn’t?

I have a lot of trouble with YA science-fiction. I occasionally love a good sci-fi romance or a paranormal/sci-fi romance. I enjoyed Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, but wasn’t fully able to get into Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I started it as an audiobook, then when I was sick… two things that don’t bode well for enjoying a book. But even when picking it up later, I just didn’t get into it quick enough. I may pick this up later, but sci-fi is always a genre that I struggle with.

A book you have bought but will never read?

I have the first two books in the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown, and I don’t think I’ll ever read them! In fact, I know for a fact that I likely won’t. They’re often compared to be similar (or exactly like) the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard, and I didn’t read more than book one of that series. Not to mention, I really only read romantic sci-fi or a very select few sci-fi books. I need to unhaul these but just haven’t yet.

A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started & have dnf’d?

This would most definitely be Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan. I was so disappointed and horrified by this book!  I wrote a full rant review here (which was so fun to write, omg!!) It was just absolutely terrible. I had so many hopes and dreams for this book, but I found this to be such a dumpster fire, and please know that I don’t say these words lightly! I don’t like being unkind about something that an author put effort in, and I truly almost never rate books this low, but this was a bit of a special case.

I’ve never read a book where the main character disappears so much in her own narrative!! But that’s only the tip of the iceberg in the problems that plagued this book. I wish I had DNF’d. Read my full review here.

A new release you have no interest in reading?

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins was everywhere back in May and during the summer. I remember reading and loving The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (and being destroyed by book three, Mockingjay), but that was a really long time ago… and I don’t really care to know President Snow’s story. That wasn’t a character I was fond of… so I really don’t care to read their story.

One of my absolute favorite series in high school was the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. The original trilogy was fiiiiiiiire!! ? I loved Warner and Juliet and Kenji and the whole crew! But then Tahereh Mafi released three more books in the series… and nah. I read the first new release, Restore Me, and hated it :( It undid all the good previously done. So I will not be reading further, or especially Imagine Me by Tahereh Mafi, the series finale.

    • I bought it when it was so popular a few years ago, and was genuinely excited!! But then I read a rant-review on it, which kind of colored my opinion of it a bit… I KNOW, ROOKIE MISTAKE!! I’m sure I would love it when/if I picked it up, but I’m beginning to doubt that will ever happen.
