Hate at first sight couldn’t possibly exist, right?
That’s what Grace Buchanan thought, before her useless car stranded her on the side of a deserted road just inside the Green Valley city limits.
When Tucker Haywood—tall and handsome and full of southern charm— shows up to help, her reaction to him is the strongest thing she’s ever felt in her life, and it makes no freaking sense.
It doesn’t make much sense to Tucker either. Not why she hates him, or why he finds her so intriguing. He knows well enough that Grace is moving to Green Valley for a fresh start, not to distract him when he’s got no room for something like her in his life.
The complications between them are endless, but that doesn’t stop her definitely not love-at-first-sight feelings from changing into something else entirely.
Grace and Tucker are about to learn the hard way that in Green Valley, hating someone has never tasted so sweet.

Disclaimer: I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, but it doesn’t influence my opinion of the book nor the contents of this review in any way.

This book is part of the SmartyPants Romance launch, which means that the book takes place in a setting originally created by one of my favorite authors, Penny Reid. She originally created Green Valley and several characters that appear in this book as side characters. The SmartyPants Romance launch authors like Karla Sorensen write stories that take place in the Pennyverse between and involving characters not always originally their creation.

Batter of Whits is written by Karla Sorensen, the same writer who brought us Baking Me Crazy, which I loved last fall!! That book featured a Levi Buchanan and his best friend – and the subject of his family’s love curse. See, in the Buchanan family, they are cursed for fall immediately with their one true love. Levi knew when he first met Jocelyn that she was The One. But she also wasn’t ready for anything relationship-ish, having only started to adjust to life in her wheelchair. So he became her best friend instead… for five years.

Now in Batter of Whits, we have only the second female Buchanan in five generations (and family lore says this is only because she came out hand-in-hand with her twin brother) and is moving back to Green Valley from LA, and to where her family hypothesizes the curse is waiting for her. She doesn’t believe in that rubbish, so she’s not worried. But then she meets Tanner. And hates him immediately one sight.

My heart felt too big for my body, too big for the room, my house, the town… Grace was freedom and choice. A risk that I had no problem taking, because it was a risk I wanted to take.

After some research in the family journals, she finds that while the men have it easy and immediately fall in love, the females tend to instantly hate their love. Ah, to be a woman :) I honestly enjoyed Batter of Whits quite a bit!! It was my first book out of my reading hangover-turned-slump, and it was a perfect breezy read to pass the time! Grace may not like Tanner at first, but she gets there :)

I really, really enjoyed Baking Me Crazyand while this one didn’t really live up to that measure for me, I did still enjoy it and will definitely be tuning into Sorensen’s next installment – the twin brother, Grady! That one is a workplace romance and with a feature restructuring her life and rediscovering herself, and I’m excited.

I honestly feel kind of bad because I don’t have so much to say? It was flirty, sweet and it was enjoyable, but it didn’t blow me away. I thought that the source of conflict was just a tad flimsy, but ultimately that didn’t impact my enjoyment much. It was kind of exactly the fluff I needed to pull me back into reading after eight days without, so kudos for that! Definitely check out Baking Me Crazy!!
