Modern Mrs. Darcy Challenge 2019

Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge 2019 Cover to Cover Book Blog kat snark

hello, lovelies!

This is the Modern Mrs. Darcy 2019 Reading Challenge! I’ve done it for the past two years, and although they’re not ultra-inventive challenges, they’re an eclectic mix of easily checked off, and harder ones. Reading a book from my TBR pile, a recommended read and three books by a favorite author is nothing new or easy. But by having those challenges with harder ones (for me), like having me read a book published before my birth year or a book in translation, it makes completing those ones all the more sweeter, and I want to complete them more. I’ll be keeping this page as updated as I can throughout the year, wish me luck!

Check out her original announcement page if you’re looking to join in the fun!

Read a book from your TBR Pile

The premise of the book is adorable and the writing was fantastic – I mean, it is JR Ward after all (if you don’t recognize her in this contemporary setting, it’s okay. It was shocking for me as well. She wrote Black Dagger Brotherhood!!!!!!). But the main character seemed like she was all hard edges and there weren’t a lot of romantic moments between them. As soon as they accepted their feelings for each other… the book ended, and I just didn’t feel that they had a whole lot of chemistry going on. Everything needed was there! It just needed… more. Read a book with a fascinating topic

This was definitely one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. It focused on an Exy sports team, which is a fictional sport that sounds hella fun. It’s a mix between lacrosse and hockey, but especially with all the aggression and scheming from an ice hockey team. Oh my gosh it was so much fun! That’s leaving beside all the amazing characters in this one that I will cherish until my dying day. Let’s just say… I’ve read this series four times already this year, and it hasn’t taken me more than two days to do it any of those times. (Read my mini-review)

Laini Taylor is a charmer. There’s nothing else for it. She’s just magical. She writes her wonderful, quirky characters that- for lack of a better word – are just a delight to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this sneak peek into their “courtship,” which seemed to perfectly embody the characters t involves. It’s an adorable book, and although I haven’t finished the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy yet, it didn’t matter. It has all the hallmarks of Laini’s writing, with an amazing courtship, with just a hint of mysterious magic to spice up the night ✨ (Goodreads review)

I really quite liked this one! It required some suspension of belief, but once I was able to do that, I was able to thoroughly enjoy myself. Leila and Vlad were just… so fun together! I had a great time watching them interact and watching Leila push Vlad’s boundaries. I can see him growing into a great, hilarious and heavily sarcastic character that I can grow to enjoy in the future. Things changed for the second book, however. Read a book chosen for the cover

Gena Showalter definitely has a style. I like it! The book was very mystery-driven (which I enjoyed) and evolved as the story went along, which kept my interest alive. It was pretty predictable in places, but interesting enough to keep my interest. There were loads of sexual tension and the characters clearly had a lot of chemistry. But the characters just felt a bit flat for me?? Mia, for one, was one of those typical low-rate Urban Fantasy heroines who substitute femininity for a ball-busting manner and loads of showboating, which has it’s place, but shouldn’t be as in-your-face as it was. Kate Daniels can pull that off, not Mia. It was exceptionally cheesy, especially when he kidnaps his lady-love and takes her to his pleasure palace. ’90s futuristic romance, anyone?? (Goodreads

Read a book by a new-to-you author

Goddamn, this one was disappointing. For one, the main mom character is frequently called “a protective momma bear” and talks (spoiler: a lot) about how she never dated because she never wanted to bring anyone into her nephew’s life (who she has custody of). But after the first meet with his biological dad, she invites him to spend the night and gets sexy with him? Despite knowing nothing about him???? Hmmm. 2 stars (Mini -ReviewGoodreads Review)

I didn’t complete this one ??

Read a book outside your comfort zone

Historical fiction is something I hardly ever pick up, even if I usually enjoy regency romances. But this book… fizzed out a bit for me. The series focuses on a group of sisters who are all hysterical and “scandalously” fun, and they book for me. BY FAR. But, unfortunately, the story itself just felt very drawn-out and I wasn’t very interested in their story as much as what the sisters were doing. This is a second-chance romance – which I usually love – that I just honestly didn’t care one whit about while reading. (Mini-ReviewGoodreads review)

Penny Reid is a definite favorite author of mine, and goodie for me, she released a trilogy early this year! It’s absolutely adorable, actually, and I loved it. It starts off with a case of mistaken identity… some requited love… a second-chance romance and a whole lot of awesome! I loved this series, but most especially the first book. Can I get an AMEN for the hot, musician and cute, shy, nerdy woman? AMEN. Then of course I read Beard with Me when that released in the fall! (Review of Motion | Review of Space | Review of Beard with Me)
