Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.
And that his best friend has a crush on me.
And that I just moved in with them.
Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?
I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?
He knows where to find me.

I’m going to preface this by saying that I adore Elle Kennedy, especially when she writes in tandem with Sarina Bowen. They write some steamy good college romances together, but I hadn’t read a college love story from just Elle Kennedy. I read this to fulfill the Reading Rush requirement to “Read a book set somewhere you wish you could go” (i.e., back to college) and for the OWLs Magical Readathon to “Read a book from the perspective of a muggle.”

At first, I did not think I was going to like The Chase. On page 11, I seriously entertained the thought of setting this book down, because I didn’t want to read a book about a girl kicked out of her sorority and all the stereotypical sorority BS that comes with that. Thankfully, I continued reading, because the sorority bit was such a tiny part at the beginning, it was almost inconsequential and I ended up enjoying this one immensely.

We follow Summer as she transfers to a new college for her junior year, but is forced into a last-minute housing crisis, as she’s kicked out of her sorority (and sorority housing) upon arrival. Desperate, she calls her brother, who’d just graduated, to see if anyone he knew needed a roommate, and luckily, he did. That’s how she ends up living with three of her brother’s old hockey teammates :) Cue waggling eyebrows. (Yes, it did feel like a New Girl situation and it was loads of fun.) But in terms of how she seriously dislike one of her roommates, Fitzy… well that’s another story and made for some juicy content.

“It’s hard to believe that two weeks ago I was excited about seeing Fitzy. Now I’m dreading it. My unicorn is no longer a unicorn. He’s a judgmental donkey.”

Summer herself was a fun character. She struggled with a learning disability tied to her ADHD and therefore fights with her own assumptions (and others) about her intelligence, and works triple-y hard on assignments. This girl deserves all the applause because she even worked on a midterm essay for two months, and I winced at that, because I’m known to do an essay within days of the due date, so I had to really respect her work ethic. But seeing as she wasn’t against partying, had a vibrant, outgoing personality and came from a wealthy family, she fought a lot of Party Girl / Getting By On Her Looks stereotypes and you couldn’t help but feel for her. She truly was such a vivid, fun character, and I loved, loved having her as a character.

Her perspective was so interesting to me! Even after her crush on Fitzy ended in a fiery crash after she overheard something he said, I had to respect how she took it. Because she wasn’t immediately passed at him, but seriously disappointed in him, instead. Plus, we have to love her for the excellent audiobook representation she provided. Now Fitzy, on the other hand, was adorable. He’s a nerd-jock, a hockey player with a future in gaming design, and a love of fantasy novels and solitude. He’s not exceptionally introverted, but he does not appreciate being the center of attention and really likes his quiet nights in.

So basically, he’s perfect. A hot guy who just likes to stay in and read? Who also happens to play hockey, one of my very favorite things??? Thank you, Ms. Kennedy. I needed to know a guy like this was possible. He is where my expectations stand. Not just because of the stereotypes he represents, obviously I’m not that surface-level (? Jury’s out on that one), but he just had a great personality. He’s gentle, smitten and quietly amused by Summer, and though he had several just stupid moments in the book, (he’s a guy so he’s allowed those few.) he’s also a protective athlete with an amazing work ethic and set of ethics. I’m honestly so sad this book is over, and not just because I very much miss the setting.
