💬  Series or standalones?   Review: Girl, Se 💬  Series or standalones?

Review: Girl, Serpent Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust (from @yasofthemonth)

Melissa, I bow to you 💛 I haven’t been vibing with YA high fantasy lately, and this felt like such a lovely gift. Utter perfection ✨

I'm obsessed with the lethal-to-the-touch premise (hello Shatter Me), and I love the distinctive direction this took. Instead of her lethal touch being a mere magical power in her arsenal (willing or not), Girl, Serpent, Thorn, chose to have conversations about what it means to be a monster, and embracing your dark side. Which I LOVVED!!! With the glittering, sumptuous style reminiscent of The Wrath and the Dawn but with the creepily effervescent fairytale feel of Uprooted, this Persian-inspired high fantasy had me transfixed.

Soraya was really going through it 😂 Full of desperation, manipulation, empathy and a delicate, wrathful rage as she claims her identity and welcomes the monstrous, I embraced her anger and indignation as much as I enjoyed her personal quarrels with piety goals versus the reality of envy and a seething, poisonous bitterness. So much power at her fingertips (literally), and I was so proud to see her eventually carve out her own space to be happy. We love a morally grey queen 👑

Speaking of proud.... it's a SAPPHIC enemies-to-lovers, let's-make-a-deal monster story 😭😭😭🙌🏼 I adored the gentle courtship amid and in the background of the spying, tragedy, and life-threatening quests, and the constant struggle of a forbidden attraction across enemy lines and deals already struck. This unique twist on the age-old trope of villainy was so refreshing. Read it!!!

🫧 What's your favorite series to reread? Hell 🫧 What's your favorite series to reread?

Hello darlings!! I know, I know... first feed post in awhile 😅😅 This is my July reading in review, most of which was done in the second half as I slammed out of my reading slump. I'm really trying to embrace reading SERIES and committing to them consecutively instead of bee-bopping around and randomly returning for more. Half my books this month were rereads, and it was lovely month of reading 💕

Specifically, I've committed to a full Penny Reid reread to celebrate my birthday (last week) 😁 I adore her books, and it's been so long since I've read her OGs. "Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend" knocked my socks off, and I've started by rereading her Knitting in the City series before moving over to her Winston Brothers books :)

Are you a Penny Reid fan?? Have you read any of her books?

💬 How's your reading going? Any recommendations 💬 How's your reading going? Any recommendations??

I've been in a GIANT reading slump for the past three months 😫😑 I'm usually 18-26 books per month... and I think I've read 4-6 per month since April? And those are mostly spicy novellas. Grrr, I just need something new to sink my teeth into and to kickstart my reading. I'm just a bit burnt out with work, I think.

I've been determined to start reading again this month, and have read a few great reads 😁
 • The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
 • Life's Too Short by Abby Jimenez (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
 • How to Be Fine by Jolenta Greenberg and Kristin Meinzer (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟)
 • Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey (⭐️⭐️⭐️.5)

At the end of June, I also read "Lukov with Love" for the first time by the Queen Zapata!! And of course reread "Dear Aaron" afterwards :))

April really snuck up on me!! Yikes. March felt *e April really snuck up on me!! Yikes. March felt *excruciatingly* long, and yet the last week flew by.

You have no idea how many mistakes I ended up having to cover up this month. I wasn't really in my ~bullet journaling groove~ I guess you could say 😅 I tried something much more complicated (it didn't work) before settling on this fairly simple design. It's pretty and cute, just like April ✨

I started watching Lost Girl while putting this together. Have you seen the show?? It's been one of my favorite comfort shows, and is basically the Canadian girl-power, bisexual, fae version of Supernatural ☺️🙌🏼 It follows Bo, a succubus, and her human best friend Kenzie and their fae PI business. The two are hilarious and I love their friendship so much 💛 There are romances (I mean... succubus) but really I watch for Bo and Kenzie 😁💫

💬 What are some characters you should stole you 💬 What are some characters you should stole your personality from?

Insecure middle-school me grabbed all these wonderful characters and BECAME them. (Six of Crows would definitely be on this list, but they came a bit later).

✨ The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater - Blue Sargent is an INSPIRATION and I stand by this. What a non-traditional ~Queen~! Also... I still want her name <3

✨ Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare - Yes, Tessa is amazing and I definitely modeled her behavior ... but Will Herondale??? If I could be him, I would. Instantly.

✨ Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan - Annabeth Chase was my soulmate for AWHILE. What a strong independent woman managing all those boy children. Hermione (love her too) WISHES.

✨ Graceling by Kristen Cashore - I read this book so many times. For some reason, I related so strongly to Katsa, a girl with a "Killing Grace." Yeah... little Kate really thought she was troubled or something. But Katsa is truly a badass and I love her <3

✨ Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas - Who wouldn't want to be Celaena Sardothien? She is grace, she is poise, she is sarcastic and she will kill you in your sleep ☺️ 😚

✨ Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder - Yelena and Valek are, first of all, ENDGAME. I love an enemy/forbidden/mentor romance 👏🏻  I also loved that they loved each other to give freedom.

✨ The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima - Raisa, a literal-actual-Royal Queen, was so fun to watch from talked-down-to child/Princess to a Queen trying to change the destiny of her kingdom from outside the walls.

💬 What's a book you meant to read last year tha 💬 What's a book you meant to read last year that you're hoping to get to soon?

FIX HER UP by Tessa Dare - KA Tucker taught me that home Reno romances are HOT. Even more so when it's her brother's best friend 😅🙌🏼

THE HATING GAME by Sally Thorne - I know I know I know.... I haven't read this one because of the hype. I'm worried it's not a *real* hate-to-love. I'm expecting some office slow burn!! Not just workplace banter that gets them between the sheets.

THE BOYFRIEND PROJECT by Farrah Rochon - I bought this last year and never read it! Story of my life. But this sounds like a girl-power pow-wow of awesomeness. And a workplace romance? I'm hoping!!

99 PERCENT MINE by Sally Thorne - Another book I haven't read because of the hype! But ayy... another home renovation romance *waggles eyebrows* And another brother's best friend romance! Can't wait :)
